US+U Art Classes with Teaching Artists
Our Studio Workshop Series are Youth thru Senior Classes offered at the gallery to the community free of charge or for a small fee that includes required materials. RSVP is mandatory to insure we have space and ample supplies!
At US+U we think its important to have our artists connect with the community and bring the community into the gallery to interact and learn from our artists.
Each class is a maximum of 3 hours and highlights something that particular artists does in his or her artistic practice. The lesson is direct, teaches a basic skill and the participants leave with a piece of art they made during the session/the allocated studio time.

Make a Functional Art Object!

In this workshop, led by artist Kaili woop, we will be using gel plates to create monotype and Collagraph prints on a canvas pouch. Participants will experiment using texture and mark making when using a gel plate to print on fabric. Acrylic paint and fabric medium will be utilized!

Cyanotype Print Workshop

Join us for a Cyanotype Workshop, led by AJ Springer, an artist featured in our exhibition Form Meets Function: The Intersection of Art & Design
A Cyanotype is a monochrome print or image made by placing objects on a pre-prepared, light-sensitive surface. Participants will work with various materials -plant matter, lace - anything that light can pass thru & will use a light box to make their prints!

Collagraphs
with Artist AJ Springer

Collagraph is a method of printmaking where various materials are adhered to a flat substrate, such as mat board or cardboard. Once the array of materials is combined together, the surface is sealed & the "plate" will be intaglio-inked, using a roller, paintbrush or combination of both. The board is then used to print onto paper or another material. With this process participants can create reproducible and edition-able prints, which then can be worked on at home, even without a press!
Participants will be asked to bring their own materials that can be flattened and glued down. Items such as fabric, plant matter, string & bubble wrap are examples of items that can be adhered to your plate.

Welcome Back Workshops
US+U is pleased to welcome artists of all levels back for onsite classes with a month of complimentary workshops for both youth and adults! After a year in isolation what better way to re-emerge into socializing than by signing up for an art class?
Thanks to a Covid-19 grant from the Yonkers IDA we are prepared to give each artist their own individual work space during classes along with other precautionary initiatives intact such as new air purifiers throughout the gallery and disposable PPE for attendees.
Take advantage of the opportunity to learn a new skill with a practicing artist and benefit from the therapeutic impact. Classes begin June 9! Stay tuned for additional classes this month!

Exploring Abstraction with Photography

It’s open registration for this Middle & High School class with artist Alexandra Momin! This workshop is free of charge for Yonkers residents 11-17 years but RSVP is required, all supplies included.

Description: In this workshop participants will use non traditional photography techniques to create unique abstract atmospheres. Using their own cell phones, students will photograph objects as seen through water, vaseline, and inks to distort the objects appearance. After capturing their images, students will be taught to use different photo editing techniques found right on their phones such as, contrast, saturation and black point, to further manipulate their compositions. Each participant will end the class with a one of a kind print to take home with them.

Description: In this workshop students will be given a brief introduction to the abstract expressionist movement through the use of visual references. They will then be introduced via demonstration to various techniques, tools, and mediums. (Alcohol Ink) As students prepare to execute their own paintings they will be shown additional examples and asked to experiment. They will ultimately complete 3 compositions on small tiles (triptych) inspired by this genre of art making.
Clay Creatures

Our October youth workshop is "Clay Creatures" led by teaching artist Lindsey Francis! Open to ages 6-12, all supplies included.
Workshop Date: Sunday Oct 27, 10-1pm
Description: Come create clay creatures with us! Participants will learn specific hand building techniques like slab rolling and coiling to make their own clay creature sculptures! After the creatures have been designed and built, they will be painted and participants will take them home. Spooky, creepy, cute or kind it’s up to you!

Description: During this workshop participants will learn how to incorporate a range of drawing and painting materials into a single composition. Working from a still life set up, the class will focus on several techniques to develop transparent and opaque layers in their works. Students will complete this workshop with several warm up drawings as well as one final mixed media artwork.

Join us for an 8 week adult drawing class led by teaching artist Lindsey Francis at Urban Studio Unbound! During this 8 session workshop for beginners, participants will learn the fundamentals of drawing. Materials like pencil, charcoal, and newsprint will be used and well as photographs, mirrors, and still-life objects for context. The resulting sketches will be exhibited at the gallery during a one week show after the workshop. The exhibition will kick off with a free culminating event where the workshop attendees will be able to share their artwork and experiences with their friends, family and the community.

About the Instructor
Lindsey graduated from Penn State University with a BFA in ceramics and a minor in psychology. From 2014 to 2015 she was the Valentine & Clark Westchester Community Foundation Emerging Artist. Currently, Lindsey has her studio at her home in Ossining, NY where she frequently shows her work and is an active board member for Bethany Arts Community and the Ossining Arts Project. In addition she is the Project Manager at Lifetime Arts, a community art show curator, mural artist and an established Teaching Artist conducting almost 400 classes in the past six years.

“Abstraction & Collage in Photography”
A Two-Part Workshop led by Artist in Residence Alexandra Momin

During this two-part workshop, the instructor will discuss different photography techniques and how they can be used to create various compositions in addition to addressing abstraction and metaphor in artwork.
In part one, students are asked to bring in an object (or multiple objects) to be used to create a personal still-life set up. Students will be introduced to a range of lighting techniques to create a strong composition with their objects. Then, using their own cell phones (or borrowing one from us) they will photograph the still life. The pictures will then be printed onsite during that session. The second session will focus on manipulating the original image, incorporating magazine cutouts and various papers to create a colorful abstracted collage. Students will complete the workshop with two finished artworks; one original photographic print and one collage.
All supplies are included and class is free of charge but seats are limited. (Students must be Middle School or High School age)

Lindsey Francis: Symbolic Self Portraits
“Symbolic Self-Portraits” with Artist Lindsey Francis

In this workshop Teaching Artist Lindsey Francis will discuss symbolism as it relates to identity and self expression. In her own work Lindsey uses flowers, animals, colors, lines & other symbols to create representational self portraits. Working with acrylic paint as the medium, students will use mirrors and imagery exclusive to their persona.

Michael Calvi: Cityscapes

In this class students will be introduced to architectural and perspective drawing. Using black and white techniques, participants will work from observation. A simple geometric still life set-up will mimic a “real life” architectural environment creating a heighten sensitivity to space & enabling students to focus in on scale, light, and shadow.
Lesson covers topics such as: how to draw depth with line weights; perspective drawing; utilizing charcoal for shading and understanding geometric forms as they relate to constructing space. Students will leave the session with 2 drawings representing 2 different scales.
Alison Marra: Capturing Light & Color

In this workshop participants will design and complete a small, unique piece of art with a process that combines collage and mosaic. Join Artist Alison Marra as she demonstrates how to "paint" with tiny, jewel-like beads on paper via using relief, color, translucency, abstraction and design principles.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alison Marra is an emerging painter and mixed media artist living in Yonkers and working in Dobbs Ferry. Her work has been exhibited recently at the Yonkers Riverfront Gallery and Upstream Gallery in Hastings, and is part of a forthcoming show through the Hastings Village Arts Commission. From 2007-2011, she completed murals in the Rivertowns at Dance & Theater Arts Studios, Purpl, and Springhurst Elementary School. She has created and taught classes to adults on how to reclaim a creative life, and since 2013 she has been artist in residence at Hillside Elementary School, where she guides students through art projects to supplement their social studies curriculum.

Vases with Faces: Creating Ceramic Vases with Personality

This class is an introduction to air dry clay and the dos + don’ts of working with the material, and how it differs from traditional fire clays. Students will learn the three basic hand building techniques; coil, slab, and pinch and these techniques will be used to create their own unique vases.
The vases will take on a life of their own as we dive into decorating and modeling faces onto our forms. Students will be encouraged to get creative, no face or vase is the same!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lindsey graduated from Penn State University, with a post bac and degree in Ceramic Fine Arts /minor in Psychology. She was the 2014-2015 Valentine & Clark Westchester Community Foundation Emerging Artist at the Clay Art Center. She currently works as the Program Manager for Lifetime Arts in New Rochelle.
Lindsey has her studio at the Carpet Mills Arts District in Yonkers and is the president of its internal organization-YOHO Artists Collective. She also actively teaches art classes to the community on weekends and evenings.

In this class participants will learn how to manipulate wire to depict a 3d form. Using an object of their choice they will first create a contour sketch.
The sketch will then be used as a guide to build this 2d rendering into a 3d model. Techniques such as wire knotting and tying will be part of the instruction.

Amanda Ioco: Contemporary Still Life Drawing Workshop

“Students attending are asked to bring a small to medium size object that is significant to them. Together as a class we will set up a still life arrangement we will use in our lesson. Students will be free to depict the still life in any scale or color (s) of their choice but will have one restriction; the objects will be sitting in a shallow space; something I commonly find myself doing in my own work. Participants will use viewfinders to identify the best composition to work from. Students will leave each session with the art work they made that day. The class will end with a short voluntary critique where students can give each other feedback and we can discuss what we have learned in the class.”

Amanda Ioco: Functional Sculpture Workshop (Oyster Shell Wind Chimes)

Students attending will make a medium sized set of wind chimes from all natural materials and oyster shells collected and cleaned from local restaurants. Color theory will be discussed. Participants are welcome to paint the shells and wooden disc, but only using one of the complimentary sets. The wooden discs and shells will be pre- drilled with holes and shells will be strung and tied. By the end of the class, the students will have a hanging sculpture that can be hung outside and will provide peaceful sounds around their home.

Color Theory with Artist Melissa Starke
Beginning in January 2016, our first youth portfolio prep workshop will be Color Theory. It will run 4 consecutive Sundays from 1:00-4:00pm.
This 4 session course will focus on color wheel, color mixing, color temperature, use of warm and cool colors, complimentary colors and color pairing. Students will then use this information to create a number of compositions- Emphasis will be placed on working abstractly and use of texture & collaging to create final projects. Students will have a complete color theory portfolio at the conclusion of this workshop.
